I don't see how we can have a book club in TORIforum without a thread full of Neil lovin'. It was, fittingly, Snow, Glass, Apples that turned me onto him, and the surprise twist (most people figure it out way earlier than I did when I show them the story #4#) was pretty great, I thought. Then I read American Gods, and eventually got around to Neverwhere, which is where I've stopped for now - the Sandman books are @#$#@ expensive, but maybe the library has a few copies, I guess... So yeah, gush about Neil now

Hah.. when I saw this thread I thought "oh duh - why didn't we start a Neil thread sooner?". I think Coraline was the first one I read. And then maybe American Gods... that's the only one of his books that I found hard to get into, and I hear that from other people too. I gave it to my dad to read (started him off with Anansi Boys though, which he loved), not sure if he's finished it yet. Stardust is probably my favourite And Neverwhere (read both of them twice, and know there'll be more re-reads in the future). And I have the first 7 Sandman books... they're excellent. I wish I could get the rest but it'll have to wait. Oh, apparently they're being re-released with newer better colours and stuff?! D'oh!

The Sandman Comics--erm, graphic novels--got me into Neil. Then, the first actual novel I read from him was Neverwhere, and the rest is history. Well, kind of.
Libraries and insane Gaiman-fan friends have been a great source for my Gaiman fix. I'd absolutely love to own the Sandman series, but they are insanely expensive as most good comic books are*, so I just have to rely on libraries. So far, so good ;D My favorite out of the Sandman stuff is Brief Lives. Probably because it was the first one I read and it features Morpheus who isn't terribly muscular and bulky as in some artists' renditions! Oh, and Delirium is there as well.
I think the only books I own from him are Neverwhere, which I bought from some sale and Coraline, which wasn't terribly expensive at all.
I still have Anansi Boys to read. I saw it in our bookstores for 30 euros. (Pretty much the same in dollars) ACK!
(*I did cough up the dough for Alan Moore's Watchmen in the US. Yikes. Collecting comic books most certainly isn't a kids' hobby these days. Who can afford them??).

Stardust is probably my favourite That is the only Gaiman novel that my sister has read, even though she is a total bookworm and loves his Sandman stuff. She prefers Terry Pratchett's novels and is trying to get me into them. Well actually, she read Good Omens, too. She just lent me Maskerade, and I plan on reading it later this week on my train ride. The Sandman Comics--erm, graphic novels--got me into Neil. Then, the first actual novel I read from him was Neverwhere, and the rest is history. Well, kind of. Neverwhere was my first Gaiman novel, too, though I read it before starting Sandman. I still have Anansi Boys to read. I saw it in our bookstores for 30 euros. (Pretty much the same in dollars) ACK! That stinks. I hope that it drops in price soon, so that you can read it. I just re-read it, and I think that it might be my favorite. I want to lend it to all of my friends to read, but I don't want to let it go as it is the one that he signed for me, so I'm just recommending it to everyone. Maybe you can find a good used copy somewhere? My sister and I have taken turns buying his books and borrowing/stealing them from each other. This is mainly the Sandman ones, though she stole my Stardust book right after I bought it and read it before I did (but she made up for it by buying Good Omens for me and letting me read it first). I also really enjoyed Smoke and Mirrors, which was an excellent book to read on the train because it is all short stories. I really liked the introduction, and I paged back to it for the description of each story before I read it. A couple of my favorites were Chivalry and We Can Get Them for You Wholesale.,.

Oh no! That's the Finnish way of translating titles so that it pretty much tells you what happens in the book or the movie. Like for example, Shawshank Redemption was translated as "Rita Hayworth--a Key To Escape". Gee, I wonder what's going to happen in that movie! Forgotten Gods sounds unfortunately like that to me. :/ DaturaFae, the crap part about buying used books in Finland and especially in my town is that a) a minuscule amount of them can be found in English and b) the second hand books are always either very old or hugely popular that someone has discareded. If a person has bought a Gaiman-book, I have a feeling they want to keep it I should've been smart and have bought the book when I was in the US! I totally forgot about it. I have to see about our library whether it's already in, even in translated form.

the only gaiman book i've read is "american gods". as i might have said in another thread, i liked it, but it didn't really entice me to read any other gaiman stuff. yet. especially the "new gods" were extremely hard for me to accept as "gods".
one of my favourite sentence in literature, though, comes from "american gods". here it goes:
"f*ck you", said the raven.
it's peculiar. i love it.

I'm noticing a trend... people who have only read American Gods, saying that it didn't really make them want to read more Gaiman. I can understand completely why it'd put them off too. But it's sad!!! His other books are awesome! Please give him another chance!

He didn't say much about it, aside from some remark about it being odd and dark, but he hasn't borrowed a book from me since. I liked it, but not neary as much as his other books.

hospital??? wha'happened??? I'll post about it in the Angry Snatch in a sec Although I'm not angry, but it's nicer there than anywhere else. Grrr, I still haven't checked our library for Anansi Boys. And now the good news is that I will start getting salary (a real, real job!) so I could afford to buy that book, too

And my favourite is Stardust even though I like them all. Coraline is my least fav. And I loved Snow, Glass, Apples story. I knew about it before and waited for it, and of course it was second last story of the collection. And that translating comment can be seen there still... About that still: Yeah, it's more revealing name but I don't really care about it, heheh. I'm not very scared of spoilers usually. I just thought it sounded cooler than kinda lame American Gods. But of course name isn't the whole book and people shouldn't got scared of crazy book names if the story itself sounds good.

i just finished neverwhere - my first gaiman read. i'm not a big fantasy person (besides my obsession with harry potter, naturally) but i have to say that i really liked it. the characters were interesting, there were some good little twists and surprises. maybe i'll pick up some of his other stuff in the future...

Yeah, I wish it was already out! Been keeping up with the progress in Neil's journal - it's all very exciting. Can't wait to see it. Am using this as an excuse to make my sister finally read Stardust (she's read bits and pieces of Smoke And Mirrors, but hasn't read one of his novels yet) because she had to admit it sounded like a good story... hehe.

I did a really stupid thing this morning. Bidded on an online auction for Death: The High Cost Of Living when I didn't really want it anymore anyway... but I thought it would be funny to hike up the price so the person who had the autobid going would end up having to pay more. Well, after a few bids I ended up STAYING the highest bidder, so now... the book is mine.
Oh well. I'm sure it'll be good. And it wasn't a huge amount of money, so it's alright.
Has anyone read this book though? What'd you think of it?

Ooh great to hear Death is definately my favourite of The Endless, well right up there with Dream anyway. I'm thinking it's money well (albeit accidentally) spent
